Should the existing shingles be removed?

Removal of existing shingles depends on several factors. Most towns do not allow a roof to be installed if there are two or more layers of existing shingles. If there is only one layer of shingles on the house, there are other problems to consider. Are the old shingles lying flat? Is the deck in good enough condition to accept another roof? Have your walls and windows remained dry these past few winters? Is there adequate existing ventilation? If the answer to any of these questions is no, then removal of the existing roof is definitely a good idea.

Not only does removal provide a better surface to install new shingles, it also allows the contractor to examine the existing deck and correct any problems that may be in existence prior to installation of the new shingles. We remove the old shingles on approximately 95% of the jobs we do. In addition to examining the existing deck, we also install ice & water barrier, tar paper, ridge vent, pipe flashings, etc. If there is any doubt about removing the old roof, then removal is the best option.
