Roofing Guarantees

We have all heard the saying, "that guarantee is not worth the paper it's written on." This statement has proved to be more than true during the last few years in the roofing business. A little background is necessary on what happened in the roofing business in the mid to late '80's. In the mid '80's, most shingle manufacturer's changed the way they made asphalt shingles. They started using a fiber glass base instead of the old organic (paper) base that was used for years. As a result, some shingles began to fail after just a few years on the roof. They started cracking and splitting, causing the roof to leak. When homeowner's tried to use the manufacturer's guarantee, they were in for a big surprise. To make a long story short, the manufacturer's refused to honor the claims to the customer's satisfaction, resulting in class action law suits by most states. These homeowner's were left with the burden of replacing their faulty roofs at their own expense.

As a result of these failures, most manufacturer's have changed the formula of the asphalt and stabilizers used in the shingle manufacture. They have not changed the fiber glass mat, which is still the backbone of the shingle. Only time will tell how these new shingles perform in the future.

However, one major manufacturer, CertainTeed, had no problems with splitting and cracking of shingles, due to their manufacturing standards. They developed their own fiber glass mats, and together with the correct amounts of asphalt and stabilizers, they confidently produced the finest shingle on the market today. They also provide the home owner with SureStart Protection . Simply put, if a manufacturing defect is discovered during the SureStart Protection period, CertainTeed will provide reimbursement of 100% of the cost of shingles and labor required to repair, or replace the defective product. The SureStart Protection period varies (from the first 5 to 10 years) depending on the shingle selected. After expiration of SureStart Protection, the homeowner is still covered by the remainder of the guarantee period of the shingle selected, (guarantee periods vary from 25 years to lifetime).

We cannot stress enough the importance of selecting a shingle that meets or exceeds the ASTM Standard Codes for Class A Fire Resistance, UL Wind Resistance, and High Tear Strength Resistance. These standards are available from all roofing manufacturer's and should be checked thoroughly before you decide on the shingle you will have installed on your house. SureStart PLUS is an extension of CertainTeed's standard SureStart protection, and is available to homeowners who use CertainTeed SELECT Roofing Contractors, and who purchase a CertainTeed Integrity Roof System. SureStart PLUS extends protection from 5 to 15 years and includes the cost of not only labor and material, but removal of the existing roof shingles as well.

Hazardville Roofing Co., Inc. will guarantee the workmanship of the shingle installation for the same amount of time as the shingle's guarantee. Also, we will physically inspect your roof 6 months prior to the expiration of the SureStart Protection Guarantee, to make sure that your roof has no defects at this critical time.
